U.S.A. TARIFF RISE

CAN AD IA N H ETA.LIATION LIKELY. United Press Association -By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) OTTAWA, June 21. While the progress of the United States tariff legislation is being followed here with attention, there is no disposition to act hastily. An attitude of watchful waiting, that was adopted hv the Government during tlio session of Parliament, is being maintained. There is no tendency to ignore the proposed changes in the United States tariff schedules, am their probable effect on Canada’s trade is being noted. Changes upward in the Canadian tariff can only he made by Act of Parliament. The view held here is that there nyobnblv would he no finality in the United States tariff until the fall It will then he time enough to determine what the effect will he oil Canada, and when that is determined the .Government has intimated that it is" prepared to act in the host interests of Canada

It seems probable that a policy oi the Government will be one of limit lv increased trade within the Empire, and the logical step to achieve this is Canndian-British preference. If the United States shuts out Canadian products, a market for them will tic sought elsewhere, preferably within the Empire. This is the view hold here.
