The Superintendent of Mercantile Marine, at Lyttelton, received the following message on Wednesday afternoon from the Secretary of Marine: *Ad vise masters that the Kalnirangi' Point lighthouse (south of Cape Farewell) was severely damaged and extinguished by earthquake and will remain out for a considerable time.”

Messrs Sullivan Bros, of Weheka, have written to the Westland Chamber of Commerce expressing thanks for the assistance given in procuring a twiceweekly mail service to Weheka aU the year round. The writer adds: “The action of the Postal authorities is much appreciated in so readily complying with the request.”

Some idea of the havoc wrought at Greymouth is gained by a tally of the chimneys wrecked. There are 990 private residences in Greymouth, and 222 in Preston Road and Blaketown, a total of 1212. An average of two chimneys per residence have been wrecked, making a total of 2424. Taking the average cost of replacing each chimney at £5, the total cost of, the replacements will approximate £12,120.

Opossum trappers in the back country felt the .earthquake on Monday In an intense form,. The hills hau the appearance of collapsing, and the noise of slips and stones falling added to the alarming effect. Reports go to show that a fair number of opossums are being taken, but not equal to last season’s total, and it is likely the trappers will ask for a close season for a couple of years. Bird life is said to bo plentiful in the back country, and in some parts deer are numerous.
