If you count yourself among the millions df Lon Chaney’s admirers, you are going to have a thrilling and entertaining evening when you see him in “The Big City” at the Princess Theatre on Friday. In this colourful, swift-moving, action-filled picture of > New York night life, Chaney plays the role of a detective, and without the use of elaborate make-up or disguises characteristic of, many of previous pictures he gives a truly marvellous performance. Marceline Day, who played the leading feminine role in Lon , Chaney’s “London After Midnight,” plays a similar part in this star’s latest , Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer starring vehicle, T ‘Thc Big City.” Miss Day will ho seen as a shop girl enmeshed in an underworld plot engineered by a detective, enacted by Chaney. James Mur■r ray, Betty Compson, Virginia Pearson, Mathew Betz and other favourites are included in the cast. “The Big City ” was directed by Tod Browning, from a story written by himself, and hns been lavishly. produced with a night club aud its spectacular ballet, and a thrilling encounter betweetr detectives and underworld gangsters, among its highlights.
