CORRESPONDENCE.

THE WATER. WE DRINK. “HEALTH AND SAFETY FIRST” (To the Editor.) Sir—The question of removal of the boat-sheds on the foreshore of Lake Jxaniori to sues provided by the Government controlling authority at Hans iiay has for some time been under consideration by the Hokitika Borough Council. It is understood that the Medical Heal in Officer is very emphatic on the question, and has recommended that a ban should be placed on the boat sheds in their present situation, and further mat in order to prevent pollution and the contamination of the water supply the public should not be allowed to congregate anywhere in the vicv 1111 ty of the intake. One would imagine that in. a matter which is vital to the health of the ummumty the Borough Council would not hesitate to act in the direction indicated by the Health Department, but judging by results up to the present time vested interests have apparently been too. much for the elected representatives of the ratepayers and residents. If the consumers of the water know as much as the writer Knows there would be an immediate rush for tanks to provide water for cooking and drinking. The owners oT the boat sheds and the members of the Roau.ng Club are above reproach. There is no objection to them, but there is very strong objection to the indiscriminate admission of anybody and everybody, clean or unclean, healthy or diseased, to the waters ol the fores hoe in the vicinity of the intake. The matter is one really for the public of Hokitika to decide, and in the opinion of a large number ..ol the local consumers the only sane and rational ticket for any responsible reorosentat’ive of tlic* residents is that indient/'d in the caption to this communication T am etc., SANTTAS.
