BRUTAL ASSAULT

YOUNG MAX' CHARGED. AUCKLAND, June 11. A sequel to a most brutal attack on a, young woman at Remuera on March 9th. was the arrest of a young man this morning in Wellesley Street. He will later he charged with the oflonce. On the night of March 9th, the victim of the assault went to a dance at •Newmarket Hall. Here she was introduced to a man, who, alter having several dances- with her, offered to escort her to her home. The young woman agreed, and they set off. Tin man’s behaviour did not meet with the young woman’s approval, and slitmade- to leave him and go home. Then the man attacked her. She said that she felt blows rain heavily on her head and face. The man punched her in the eyes and mouth and on the cheeks in quick succession. The girl screamed for help, aiuUsLruggled with her assailant, but there was ho one about at the time, and she was forced to struggle alone. Eventually the young woman nrokc away from the man and made for her rooms as quickly as she was aide. She says that she scarcely remembers reaching her house. Next morning when the young woman’s employer went to her room, she was appalled at the sight. Ihe young woman’s eyes were both black and closed. Her mouth was cut and bleeding, and her right cheek was lacerated and b.ack with bruises. She was unable to get up, and a doctor was called. After hearing the young woman’s story the doctor informed the police., As soon as the p lice were informed they instituted Inquiries. The name ol the man alleged to have committed the assault was known. However, he is said to have left Auckland for a time and made for Wellington. Inquiries were made there, licit the wanted man liad left for some other part of the Dominion. This morning he was reeognised in Wellesley St., and later arrested. ASSAULT CHARGE AUCKLAND. June 12. Arthur Collins (aged £X>). a labourer, was remanded on £490 bail (forthcoming in two sureties) on a el large of assaulting a young woman on March 9tit on her way home from a Remuera dance, so as to cause actual bodily harm.
