LOCAL BODIES CONFER. A meeting of representatives of local bodies within No. 12 Main Highways District was held at the County Chambers, Greymouth, last evening relative to the allocation of heavy traffic fees. Mr J. sence of the Westport Borough and Inaugahua County representatives, and stated that group in future would control its own traffic, and to that end had appointed two Inspectors. Air Sloss’ services would he’ available accordingly, fully for the Grey and Westland Counties and interior Boroughs. /

r It was decided to protest to the Minister of Transport against any , reduction in heavy traffic- fees. Also to write the Government opposing the setting up of a South Westland Main Highways Board. It was de.I aided also to bring these points lm- ; fore the Members for Buller and 1 Westland for support if the subjects . were brought before Parliament. [ The quota for Tuimnra Borough was ~ increased to £l2O. It was decided . the Grey District group agree to a , telephone being installed in the Inspector’s office. The Secretary reported in regard to lengthy returns forwarded the Transport Department, and in respect to new regulations. These were received, and in view of the - extra work entailed an increase of £lO was granted to the Secretary. The Westland group agreed to the same allocation as previously covering the Westland County and Hokitika and Boss Boroughs. The Grey District group met subsequently to discuss the allocation for tin* year. The meeting concluded at 9.15 p.in. EELS AND DUCK'S. A Wanganui sportsman states that eels are a real nuisance on some of toe lakes in the district this season. The other day he lost several ducks , which ho had shot and had fallen into ( the water, the birds being grasped by the legs and dragged under. One i big eel rose to the surface to get a i duck that had l>een shot, and got a I bullet through its head. The same « sportsman said he saw eels trying \ to pull a decoy duck under the water, f believing it to he a real bird.
