“ We are not quite sure whether you will be turning the first sod or whether it will lie the Prime Minister,” said Mr A. W. Hall, M.P., when introducing a deputation atMaramarua to the Minister of Railways (the Hon. W. 11. Taverner) last week, and expressing 'the hope that they would have the pleasure of welcoming the Minister to tin district for the official opening at no distant date. “That is the Prime .Minister's function,” replied the Minister, and with' a twinkle, lie added: “But if the Prime Minister turns the first sod. perhaps I may he permitted to turn the last.” Mr Taverner left- the distinct impression that even though the building of the railway may be a matter of years he con templates still being a- member of -the Ministry ’ iii power. ■
