FASCISM
POPE’S CRITICISM RESENTED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright). LONDON, Juno 7. The Times’R Rome correspondent says';—Thus far the “Tevere’’. and the “Impero” arp the only Fascist newspapers to comment upon the Pope’s letter regarding Signor Mussolini, which only the Roman Catholic organs have published fully. Other papers give only inadequate and paitial summaries. The “Tevere” ignores most of the Pope’s points and it describes his letter as merely a “solemn foreseen affirmation of the church’s viewpoint.” The paper concedes that the letter is completely consistent with Roman Catholic dogma. The “Impero” on the other hand, violently attacks the Pope for daring to conjure the Duce. It says: “We have never offended the Church, and the Church must not offend Fascism. Fascism is not to he criticised save hy Fascists: the Duce hy no one.” The Times’s correspondent adds: It is evident from the Pope’s letter that the future is going to he full of difficulties for Italian Roman Catholics who are also convinced Fascists. They are already beginning to realise that the inner conflicts between their civil ’ and religious loyalties are still far from being solved.
