(Received this day at 10.30, a.m.) LONDON, June 4., The loading scorer in the first stage of the Air Force Rifle shooting cham-; pionship at Bisley was Flight-Lieut. S. Wallingford, champion of 1927, who aggregated 72-7 points, in the first three practices. He stands an excellent chance of the championship. He is shortly going to New 'Zealand, to take up an Air Force Commission and join his father who was well known in pre-war as a competitor, at Bisley.
M. HERRIOT’S SPEECH. PARTS, June 4. An authorised version has been issued o'f M. Herriot’s speech (cabled yesterday), which has substantially toned down the reference to Britain. An Example is: “How niuchihappier she would be if she could count, as we do, on an abundance of agricultural resources to supplement the industi ial wealth so threatened by the development of the Dominions and other nations, but Britain will triumph as hitherto by strength and perseverance though not without suffering.”
AN Alii MEMORIAL. (British Official Wireless.) (Received this day at 11 a.m.) RUGBY, June 4. It is understood the announcement regarding the provision of a permanent memorial of the first Atlantic flight made by Sir John Alcock and Sii Aithur Whitten Brown on June 14th, 1919, will bo made at a luncheon to be held'next week to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the flight. It is proposed to erect obelisks at their starting point in Newfoundland and at the hashing point in Ireland, and in addition to hold each year on June 14th, a special anniversary flying event..
