EXCHANGE OF TELEGRAMS.

(By Telegraph—Press Association).

AUCKLAND, May 31.

Further telegrams were received today by Mayor Baildon from the .German Consul at Wellington, in reference to the approaching visit of 'the cruiser Emden. The telegram received previously was to the effect that assuming there were grounds for the press references to the proposed civic reception, the Consul respectfully suggsted that any such proposal be abandoned in order to avoid public controversy.

Mr Baildon thereon replied thanking the Consul and stating that he was in accord with the views expressed by the Consul. To-day's wire from Wellington stated in view of some erroneous interpretation being given in the press to my respectful telegraphic suggestion to you, T would very highly appreciate a public declaration from you /to the effect that you consider my action timely and helpful. In complying with the Consul’s request Mr Baildon states that bo is in accord with the Consul’s views and that it is his intention to carry out wishes expressed in his telegram that there will be no civic reception.
