LEGAL PROFESSION DEFENDED. A defence of tlie legal profession, in view of the criticism that had been levelled at it, was made by Mr M. J. Gresson, president of the Canterbury Law Society, in 1 the course of his remarks at the annual dinner of the Real Estate Institute of Canterbury and Westland. .Law and legal service in New Zealand, said Mr Gresson, was cheaper, more expeditious, and better than in any other part of the British Empire. In New Zealand, a common law case could go before the Supreme Court ,th e Appeal Court, and the Privy Council, and be disposed of within a year’. In England, with the Courts at the door, so. to speak, it took two or three years. Also, in New Zealand, a man had some idea of what it’would cost him to conduct a case; in England lie did not. “Though New Zealand is only 79 years old, It has already produced men in the legal profession whose brilliance has not boon exceeded anywhere,” said Mr Gresson. *
