STATEMENT BY MERCHANTS. (A’lfitralian Press Association) (Received this day at 9.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 29. The Secretary of the Timber -n.erflmnts’ Association (Mr Cook) stated •in New South Wales, except in Newcastle and Sydney, in South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia, 48 hours and the Lukin aivard ale being ifully observed. Out of a membership of 27,000 in the Timber Workers’ 1 Union hot more than G.OOWare now'on strike against the aivard. j v MELBOURNE INTENTIONS. r MELBOURNE, May 29. Negotiations, having failed to settle the strike, the Timber Merchants have decided to re-open the mills and call for labour under the award rates and hours. A mass meeting of two thousand workers affirmed the intention to hold out for forty-four hours and the Webb award.
