UNIVERSITY EXAMS

GRAVE REFLECTION REFUTED.

NO AUTHORITY FOR STATEMENTS

(By Telegraph Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, May 28

After the results of tlie Matriculation examinations were published there appeared in the papers in New Zealand a report of a meeting oil’ the limine* High School Board of Governors in which a grave reflection was made on the fairness of the examinations. The University made enquiries loth from the headmaster of the school-who v. as said to he the source of information and from the Board, at a meeting ol which the statements were reported to have been made.

It appears that the report was of an informal talk that followed a meeting and referred to some conversation that took place some da vs previom.lv between the headmaster and the secretary of the Board.

The headmaster denies he made any reflection on the fairness of the examination, and in a letter to the University says, inter alia: “I do not know the name of even an assistant examiner. I have not stated that any student or school was to get a jolly good run. lam surprised that reputable Auckland papers should broadcast a hearsay statement without consulting the person most involved.”

The Board of Governors also writes ■to'’the effect that the matter was not officially before the Board and regrets “ a verbal discussion of two officials should have gained the publicity it has done.”

The University trusts the publication of these statements will remove any uneasiness that may have been caused by the wide circulation o'f opinions ior which there was no foundation whatever.
