SOLDIER BURIALS

HOi\. WILFORD’S STATEMENT,

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, May 28. Referring to statements circulated from time to time to the effect that deceased returned soldiers are in some cases buried as paupers owing to the indifference of the Government and others concerned, Hon. T. M. Wilford stated to-day that such is entirely contrary to fact. Sir Heaton Rhodes in 1923 obtained Cabinet authority for the payment by the Pensions Department of reasonable expenses, and that policy has been in force ever since and the present Government bad no intention of discontinuing it. The Government would never stand for the burial of returned soldiers as paupers. Fie said that definitely every one of his colleagues supported it and by so doing was merely carrying out the Cabinet decision, passed some years ago by the late Government.
