Robert A\ ilhain Lanier, the young American negro who came to New Zealand in an endeavour to join Byrd’s Antarctic Expedition, and was subsequently acquitted in the Supreme Court on a charge of stabbing a boatswain was to have been deported by the steamer Golden Cross to-day. However it was later reported that he failed to sail on the steamer. The Customs Department is inquiring into the matter.
