A VIOLENT MAN

PARTIALLY BLIND SOLDIER assaulted. AUCKLAND, May 20. “This man was evidently under the impression that Chinese have no right to Ih> in this country. He was coming down Hobson St. yesterday and lie put bis fist through the glass door of a Chinese fruiterer’s shop; not eonlent with doing that damage lie assaulted a partially blind returned soldier. I don’t think he was actually drunk, Inil he was certainly suffering from the effects ol drink when lie committed the acts.”

These remarks were made by Sub--1 inspector McCarthy when William Reed pleaded guilty to being drunk, assault, mischief and smashing a- glass door, before Mr Hunt, S.M. in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Mr McCarthy said Reed had 13 previous convictions against him.

Reed: I was injured myself in the war.

Mr Hunt: That doesn’t mean you can injure other people. Reed: Can 1 have a few days to

pay ! Mr Hunt: No: those few days will lie well spent in getting the drink out of vour system.

Heed was fined a total amount of £;>, Hi,, alternative being 17 days at Mount F.dcn Gaol.
