Canton is still uncaptured, though the nearby Sainam is definitely in the hands of Kwangsi troops. Meanwhile there is much uneasiness in the city in the belief that large numbers of Communists are awaiting an opportunity to effect a coup. A private Chinese wire reports the Nanking Government is despatching fourteen transports with troops with the object of assisting Canton. A largo consignment of bullion arrived at Hong Kong from Canton, for safe storage. Steamers from Canton are arriving here crowded, including many officials. Kwangsi laid river mines for ten miles below Wuchow against Canton warships. Meanwhile foreign Consuls are instructing foreigners in procedure, in the event of a sudden evacuation. CANNIBALISM IN CHINA. OWING TO DROUGHT AND MILITARY ACTIVITIES. (Received this day at 11 a.m.) PEKIN, May 21. Gannibalism has become a common experience in the famine-stricken province of Kansu. According to reports received here, the starving populace fell upon a band of thirty-five brigands, killed them and ate their flesh. It is estimated that thirty m.illions are now reduced to famine level in China, chiefly owing to drought, blit, also on account of military activities preventing the transport of grain to tbe distressed regions.
