The telephone carrier system which gives a larger range of speech between the two islands, is being installed in Christchurch. The death occurred in the Whakatane Hospital of David Higgins, n veteran of the Crimean and Maori wars. Mr Higgins had given his ago as 104 years. He was born in County Waterford, Ireland. As a young man he fought through the Crimean war, and later he was djrafted to Australia as a member of the garrison there. Then the Maori war broke out, and Air Higgins was sent to New Zealand. With the 78th. Regiment, he took an active part in the pursuit of Te Kooti. He was a single man. and had no relatives in New Zealand. There are no means at hand to verify his age, but he was recognised as an extremely old man.
