SUPREME COURT.

YOUNG MEN SENTENCED. SERIOUS CHANGES. WELLINGTON, May 20. “I have frequently heard Judges say from their seats in this Court that- the sentencing of prisoners is the most unpleasant part, probably the only unpelasant- part, of a Judge’s duty. Already 1 have found reason to feel the correctness of that statement. A sadder spectacle than that of 'four young men like you coining before this -Court on a serious charge is difficult to conceive,” remarked the Chief Justice today, when Thomas Gordon, '2l, for breaking, entering and theft and arson; George Wilfred Ryan, US), and Richard Ryan, '26, receiving, and Hewitt Allen Capon, for receiving, appeared for sentence. His Honor said that probation was out of the question. Gordon was sentenced to live years’ hard labour ; George Ryan to two years’ hard labour; Richard Ryan to eighteen months’ hard’labour; and Capon to fifteen months’ hard labour.
