THE DOLE SYSTEM
SOME AMAZING ABUSES
—A. THE MINISTER’S DECLARATION
(Australian Press Association)
{Received this day at 9.25. a.m.) SYDNEY, AI ay 21.
Amazing abuses of the dole system were revealed in Cessnock district on information gathered by Air Weaver (Minister of Mines) during his visit to the coalfields. This has convinced him of the need of a stricter supervision of the distribution of unemployment rePef. ’
Mr Weaver quoted some remarkable, eases. One was of a former employee of.one of the closed mines, who from the family endowment, federation relief and other kindred sources, was drawing a total unearned income of £2l fortnightly.
A second case was of a man recently who returned to Australia after a two years’ trip round the world at his own (expense. He went to the coalfields and placed himself on the dole. Many heads of families were withdrawing deposits from the banks, hiding the money, and then marching to the police station arid demanding relief.
