MINISTERIAL REPLIES. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., has received Ministerial replies concerning matters brought before Ministers by deputations and personal representations by Mr O’Brien as follows: HOKITIKA WHITER A ITERS. From Hon J. G. Cobbe t Minister ol Marine and Industries:— In reply to your telegram re representations made to you by Mi O’Brien, M.P., on behalf of the Hokitika whitebait fishermen, the posiion is that it is illegal to allow sawdust to run into Hokitika River. There is great difficulty in detecting, who is responsible, as the sawdust is released at night. No less than si: prosecutions have been taken five of which were .successful, hut the fine'imposed by the Magistrate do not aE as sufficient deterrent, the. fine'-' varying from one pound to five pounds. With regard to the question of .the restriction of the whitebait fishing season and overhaul ,of whitebait regulations generally, ! shall lie glad to receive any further representations that Hokitika fishermen desire to make.
