OBITUARY. By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Ma y 20. Obituary.--G. I). Macfarlane, aged 72. of Riecarton. He was a well known wholesale fruit merchant. ALLEGED FRAUD. DUNEDIN, May 20. At the Police Court, Thomas Scurr, ail auctioneer, was charged with fraudulently converting to bis own u.se £282, being part of the proceeds of an assigned estate. Evidence was given that accused conducted a sale and the gross amount realised was £7Bl. Accused was to receive the ordinary auctioneer's commission on the sale and after deducting it to pay £682. A cheque from accused for £460 was* paid by the bank leaving the balance £2S2 owing. Accused gave a cheque for the latter amount, but it was not paid by the bank. Accused confessed to judgment for £282 and costs. In a statement to a detective accused said the money was used by him in the course of business. He had expected his father to stand behind him in the,,matter, and there was no necessity, for him to pay the money received into the trust account. Accincd reserved his defence and was committed for trial.

A young farm labourer, Charles Mosley, was accidentally fatally shot by Archibald Campbell, at Owhango on morning. A party were shootings pigs and cattle in the bush. Campbell saw Mosley moving ~un the undergrowth and mistook him for a. beast. He was shot in the head, and died almost immediately. A MAN 1 KILLED. WHAKATANE, May 20. William Robert Baker, a carpenter, aged 48, was killed as the result of a fall from a motor cycle at 7.30 this morning. It appears deceased was riding along Domain Road towards town when a motor lorry came out from a side street. It is stated that, when Baker saw the lorry he endeavoured to' iiierease his speed, and the bicycle skidded in tlie loose metal and dashed into' a telegraph pole on a street corner. Deceased was thrown eighteen feet, landing oh his head.He received terrible injuries and death must have been almost instant-, aneous. THREE YEARS’ DETENTION. PALMERSTON N., May 20. A sentence of,three years’ detention in the Borstal Institute, was imposed on Andrew Gordon Robinson, 18, for theft of a suit of clothes, etc. valued at ,£7 13s, at Glenbrok, near Drury, on April 24tli.
MAN DROWNED. NAPIER, May 20. Whilst inspecting flood damage yesterday Frances O’Donnel, aged 28, a farm labourer, fell into a breach in the river hank at Meanee, where the water was about ten (foot deep. He could not swim and despite valiant lescue efforts by four companions, was drowned. The body was recovered two hours later, after dragging. John Muir, a railway fireman, made great efforts to save the deceased but had to give up as he found himself in difficulties and only got out of deep water through the efforts of a man named Stanford, whose assistance had been summoned.
