The Meat Conference met and discussed strategy for making effective their protests against meat rates Air Benjamin was host and it was decided that since the Hawley Bill has been recommitted by the )Va.\s a> u Moans'Committee for changes in various schedules that no action should be taken until tbe House passes tbo amended Bill probably early in June, particularly since it is known that meat producers here are endeavouring to secure an 8 per cent rate on beef instead of six. Meat importers fear this will be adopted, in which event when the measure goes to the Senate they will present a memorandum to the Senate Finance Committee. This will consist of a protest as originally filed with the House Committee, and an addendum strongly stressing the facts that higher duties will lie " calamity costing consumers many millions and moreover hindering American exporters. The thesis will be that purchasers of American goods will cease to buy, if they have no market in which to sell their own goods. It is expected that at least three Senators will espouse the cause of the meat importers on the floor of the Senate.
