PREMIER BALDWIN
ADDRESSER LONDON
(British Official Wireless.)
(Received this day at 11 a.m., RUGBY, May 16
Mr Baldwin (Prime Minister) addressed a meeting of electors of the City of London this afternoon, emphasising the importance which the Conservative Party attached to sound finance. He said much of the productive and industrial power of this country had been built up with the knowledge, sympathy and help of the City of London. that city which was so sensitive to the interplay of international commerce and to the success or failure of industry at home. Within this tiny area of the City London, there was unrivalled financial power and responsibility. This had not been built up primarily on gold. It had, been built up on something more difficult to get, and that was character.
Saving that it was part nf the Labour programme to damage the financial stability of the country, the Prime Minister pointed out the intimate connection between sound finance and the standard of living of every working man and woman.
Referring to safeguarding, Mr Baldwin repeated that import duties would only be applied upon application by a specific industry, and alter an impartial inquiry. Iron and stool would he treated exactly like any other industry. It would have to make out its case before a tribunal. He had pledged himself not to impose food duties.
