JUDGE’S STRICTURES. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.' AUCKLAND, May 15. “I have come to the conclusion that you are a plausible and dangerous man. Constitutionally, you are evilly disposed. I have no hesitation in stating that where you arc, no chillis safe and no is secure against insult.” Thus denounced by Mr Justice Hoidman in the Supreme Court Mils -. morning, Bertram: Augustine O’Connor, aged 35, wa*n sentenced tfour .years hard labour for -indecent assault and indecent exposure. On each of two obscene language charges O’Connor was s sentenced to thre< months’ imprisonment, the terms to be concurrent to the major sentence. . “ Your counsel has described you as more of a fool than a knave. All criminals are fools,” Mr Justice Herdman told Ronald Alfred M.onten, when sentencing him for theft in the Supreme Court this inornnig. His Honour said the theft was a particularly mean one, and almost amounted to!:robbing a drunkenninan. The facts Were that in country, shepherd came to, the city and in a moment of foolishness, quit money in Monten’s charge. The!-latter abused that trust, and almost, succeeded in absconding from New Zealand. In addition .to .that, tho prisoner took his stand ! in the witness diox-iabd perjured himself 1 in ail impudent fashion. A half-caste Chinaman named Sue Wall, was brought before Chief Justice Myers in the Supreme Court for trial on a charge of stealing a purse and the contents, valued at £2O Bs. .Miss Edith Stewart said that she called at tlie accused’s fruit shop at Island Bay, and loft her purse by mistake. THEFT AND FORGERY. GISBORNE, May 15. Sentence of three months in gaol was imposed by Air Harper. S.M.. on Wm. Jar vie, for the theft of an eiderdown quilt, valued at £2. On a chaige of forging a cheque at Gisborne lie Was committed for sentence, and on a charge of forging and uttering a cheque for £lO 10s 6d at Napier, he was remanded to appear at Napier on May 23.
