POWER GRADERS ON ROADS
In the course of a lengthy report on road maintenance, Mr .1. Norris, Whangarei County Engineer, made reference to the use of power graders in county reading work. “'I hose machines,” he stated, “have proved most. •Hicienl in scarifying ami shaping ..etui roads, and also have given some •i-plendid 'results in re-forming clay roads in dry condition. There are 12!) mi.es of highways which are the main traffic roads, and iroin the present showing it will he necessary to gi over these roads twice a year, and there are 200 miles of secondary roads hi which a yearly grading should he done. On an average estimate, each machine will condition hall a mile per day, giving on metal roads alone !|(j machine days’ work in the year. Each machine will average about 270work ing days per year, and this points to the fact that three machines will hardly cope with the work on metal roads alone. Should clay roads he given regular attention with the power grader,, it appears that a further three will he required to cope with tin work in .this county.”
