William Worsloy, an ex-warder at Porirua Mental Hospital, was sentenced to 12 months hard labour by Chief Justice - Myers for perjury in connection with the recent trial of a warder for maltreating a patient. Chief Justice Myers s;iid that such' an offence struck at the very root of the administration of justice. Corneille Hubert Do Mev Delkemade was sentenced to 18 months hard labour on three charges of theft by converting to his own use £2OO belonging to a widow, whom lie had persuaded to execute a power of attorney in his favour. Chief Justice Myers said that it was a very mean theft. INVERCARGILL, May 14.

The Supreme Court opened before Justice Smith who congratulated the district on tho fact that there were no cases for the Grand Jury.

Wirimu Meinata, 21, who pleaded guilty, received five years probation for burglary- and theft. The Court 'is now hearing a slander case in which the Southland Fanners Cash Supply Service claimed £2OOO damages from Ronald Sim, a farmer, for a statement made at a Farmers’ Union meeting, reflecting on the plaintiff’s business methods.

The Court is hearing argument on the question of privilege.
