WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE

MONDAY, MAY 13th, 1929. The Council of the above League met at the County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock. Present: Dr TeichelmaWi (President), Messrs Wilson, IV. E. Richards, D. J. Evans, A. G. Pilkington, and IV. J. Butler. Apology was made for tlie absence of Messrs Jeffries, Bruce, and Duff. The minutes of the previous meetin ,r were confirmed, and tho outward correspondence was approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

From J. O’Brien, M.P., stating ho would co-operate with the settlers regarding the road desired to link Okuru with Jackson Bay.—Received. From District Engineer, stating the Public Works huts on the main south road were in order Ifor the purpose intended. The huts complained of by recent travellers were not the property of the Department.—Received. From Same, asking for copies of tho map of the South Westland glacier region issued by the League.—Received and supplied. From Southland League, forwarding copy of minutes of monthly meeting.— Received. From E. James, Makarora, reporting on tour of publicity photographic party and other matters. —Received with thanks. From Publicity Officer, approving ol suggested scheme by Mr Evans lor cooperating in advertising, reporting as to action by the Publicity Office, and promising further attention as necessary.—Received with thanks. GENERAL. The Chairman reported meeting the representatives of the Canterbury Automobile organisation when here last month, and support was accorded tho movement to improve the East and West Coast road for motor traffic. Mr Evans .referred to the efforts oi the Westland Wood Pulp Syndicate to establish the* industry in the district, and it was resolved to write the Secretary to ascertain the position at present with a. view to supporting the proposed industry along economic lines. The meeting rose at 8.15 p.m.
