REPARATIONS
PRESS COMMENT. ON BRITISH DECISION. , United Press Association. —By Electric Lelegu.pli.—Copyright.} (Recei'cd this day at 8.30. a.m.) LONDON, May 8. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent states the British Government is determined strictly to adhere to the Balfour Note, and not expose the Britsih taxpayers to further sacrifices. On behalf of other Powers it is learnt from other sources that the British delegation maintains that the present conference is not concerned with the distribution. The Conference was called to fix the German debt revison, and it is argued that the Spa percentage is outside the conference of experts. Young’s distribution could not in any ease form part of the committee’s report, since Germany is not concerned in the division of reparations among the Allies. PARIS, May 8. The newspapers arc unanimous in commiserating with Britain in the loss under the Young proposal, but there is a certain acidity in the comments. Thus the “Echo do Paris” states it is no doubt absurd that the British treasury should be thus despoiled, biit why did not the British delegation send Schaclit back on the Dawes system on 19th. April. Similarly, “Lc Journal” states that no one lias done more than Stamp to reach an agreement, but adds, “Ericlently an electoral advertisement required by Britain, who now finds the lill somewhat heavy.” “Le Journal” estimates the American plan would deduct 150 millions sterling from capital reparations and 71 millions from each annual payment. Britain who claimed one hundred and fifty millions on behalf of her Dominions for monies payable to United States,- will only receive 32J millions. THE REPARATIONS COMPROMISE. LONDON, May 8. It is reliably stated that the repara-, tious compromise involves the British Empire in a three per cent reduction it the Spa percentages, gravely minimising Australian and New Zealand shares though not entirely wiping them out. THE REPARATIONS ISSUE. LONDON, May 8. Tn the House of Commons, replying to Col die 1 AYedgewood’s question regarding the Paris exports dealing with the- Spa percentage. Air Samuel sugges'.ed that the question bo repeated o-m MTow. Tlie Chancellor ol the ExrJ.iequer would in the meantime consider whether he could make a .statement.
