WORKERS COMPENSATION ACT
AMENDMENTS AY ANTED. WELLINGTON, May 7. On the ground that the handling of bitumen is a potential cause of cancer and ulcers, representations have been made to the Minister of Labour (Hon. AV. Vcitch) asking that suitable provisions l>e made in an amendment to the AYorkers’ Compensation Act. The attention of the Minister has also been called to the unsatisfactory nature 'of the provision in the Act, stipunting that no compensation shall lie paid in cases of occupational diseases unless the disease was contracted within twelve months prior to bho incapacity or death of the worker. It is submitted that it is impossible for a doctor in many cases to say when a disease was contracted. The Minister stated that inquiries were being made into (lie suggestion hut no decision was likely to he arrived at for some time.
