TRAGIC OUTCOME
man drowns himself. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, May 7. A Coronial Inquiry into the circumstances .surrounding the death by drowning at Queenstown of Alexander St. Clair McGregor, was held at Queenstown yesterday. Evidence was givenby a young lady, who said she iiad Ttno.vn the deceased for lour years, and had been engaged to him for tiie last two years. She was wit-ii the deceased till about 11.30 on Saturday night last. He showed no desire to go to bed, but with the aid of a bedroom mate of his, a man named Cooper, witness final.y persuaded the deceased to retire. The deceased appeared to he in a fit of passion all the evening. F. Cooper said that he accompanied the deceased on a short stroll, and went hack to the house with him. After a few words. ; lie deceased left his hoarding house, and set off at a run in the direction the wharf. Cooper followed him, hut on arriving at the wharf, he found M.-Gregor’s overcoat and jersey lying on tise wliarl. He (Cooper) searched for M, G regor, but finding no trace of him, rawed an alarm. The search was continued, and dragging operations were instituted, but without immediately success. Dragging was commenced again • at daylight, and eventually the body was discovered at 7.30 a.m. close to the wharf.
The Coroner returned a verdict, of “Suicide while in a lit of violent temper.”
