BOMBAY RIOTS
oTATEMENT P.V UNDERSECRETARY. 1Y TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSN., COPYRIGHT. .Received this day at 12.26. run.) RUGBY, May 6. Earl Winlerton (Under Secretary for India) made the following statement regarding the recent rioting in Boml).iv. The general strike in Bombay mills was declared on 26th April. On Ist May there were several attacks on workers by strikers, hut the fact that most of the strikers were Hindus and most of the non-strikers Mohammedans indicated the risk of the development off communal trouble especially as there had been serious communal disturbances on the 27th April, apparently unconnected with the strike. Communal rioting spread from the mill areas to the central parts of Bombay .and continued on 2nd and :ird May and on the latter date, 200 rifles off the -Warwickshire regiment wore called out and on the following day military posts were strengthened. The Bombay Government now regards the situation as on the whole quiet and the force on the spot is at present adequate.
