STEWARD CHARGED
STEAMER. HELD UP. JY TICr.EGKAPH PRESS ASSN’., COPYRIGHT “WELLINGTON, May G. According to a passenger’s story, which is confirmed by the purser, a Relay ’iof two hours was .suffered by tin* Tahiti in getting away from Papeete. A steward was arrested by the French authorities on a charge of theft and bail was refused, owing to the French law which requires proof of innocence, as against the British i 'roof of guilt. The stewards demonstrated on the wharf and wanted to go to the gaol to release their comrade, but the French guard appeared armed. The stewards also refused to go aboard and so the ship was held up. However all ended well, enough, by someone giving proof that the steward was innocent.
