MAY DAY
HEAVY COMMUNIST CASUALTIES. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). LONDON, May T. At Berlin, as the result of the police attack on barricades six communists were killed, and eighty were wounded. Over one thousand were arrested. BERLIN, May 1. The casualties amounted to eight killed and seventy-eight wounded, including twenty-four policemen, but the rate probably is much higher, as it is believed that the Communists secretly removed some of their killed and carried ofF their wounded. May Day was uneventful in other parts of Germany. FALSE REPORTS. LONDON, May 1. Reports from the European capitals now reveal that the alarm as to May Day threats of riots and bloodshed was due merely to empty Communistic propaganda. London went about its work unaffected. There was a big procession to Hyde Park. This did nothing more than to seriously dislocate the traffic. Reports from .the Ruhr district show that the May Day demonstrations there were orderly, while in the Rhineland and the Westphalia, the day’s demonstrations were quieter than for years past. Bucharest says that the country was undisturbed and that the outdoor festivities wore calm. Vienna was very quiet. Warsaw on May Day was the quietest since the war. At Moscow, several were killed and wounded. Reports from Barcelona state that two bombs exploded there partly destroyed a bridge, and telephone wires were out. The opinion is expressed that it was something more serious than a May Day demonstration.
