HOCKEY.

One of the best exhibitions of hockey was played in Hokitika yesterday when Mawliera and Hokitika clashed sticks. In the first half off the match play was of even nature, the ball travelling tvith astonishing rapidity from one end of tlie field to the other. Mawliera scored the first goal before half time and this wakened Hokitika to further efforts. Half-time was called , with Hokitika strongly attacking. .On the second spell resuming Hokitika led the attack and were unlucky in not scoring on a few occasions, but Mawliera hacks were defending well. One shot at goal struck the top of.the net, and shortly J. Hall shot a fine goal, earning great applause from the spectators. Hokitika attacked strongly throughout the remainder of the game, having by far the best of the play. When time was called the scores were even—one all. Mr J. Butland and Mr. B. Ryan were the referees.
