APPRENTICE APPEALS AGAINST

DISMISSAL

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, May 1

A carpenter’s apprentice, Alfred Stanley Martin, appealed to the Arbitration Court against his dismissal by his employer Adams and Hine. That 1 was the only Christian on the joo he said, and it was hard to get on with the others. These men have a good opinion of myself, hut I have too good an opinion of Christianity to turn it down.

• The Secretary of the Builders’ Assn, opposing the appeal said the appellant had given dissatisfaction because of bis inefficiency on scaffolding and frequent absences from work At Christmas Martin took an extra week’s holiday, and was dismissed.

The Appellant said lie could not walk on the scaffolding because lie was nervous and denied that he had tout the pol'ce that his employer had told another hov to swear at him.

Giving his decision Judge Fraser said though there was a suggestion of priggishness on Martin’s behaviour, his employer was probably not one to be sympathetic with the lad. It would be useless to send Martin back as his life would no doubt be made a living hell by others on the job. The case was adjourned for three months and in the meantime the registrar of apprentices would lie appealed to for transfer to a suitable firm.

WANTED A GOOD HIDING

DISMISSED APPRENTICE IS

REBUKED

AUCKLAND, April 30. A plumber's apprentice, H. R. Carter, appealed against his discharge by his employer, W. A. Chenerv, of'Newmarket, in the Arbitration Court this morning. It was complained that Carter had been dilatory, careless and on one ocasion had wanted to fight the foreman. Appellant, while admitting a certain amount of misconduct, did not think that the severity of a penalty of dismissal should have been imposed on him.

The employer’s representative said that he had a bad influence on tiltother apprentices and wanted to fight the foreman. In December last lie had walked off a job in order to get parts for a small car in which he travelled to his work.

“Is that an offence, or is it an explanation of slackness,” asked Air .Justice Frazer, jocularly. Counsel said that the car did not enter into the question, though it did not seem to get him to work on time. Mr Justice Frazer: She was a lady and had to he treated as such. (Laughter'). The Judge dismissed the appeal and administered a stinging rebuke. Cbenery havino de'-lined to take Carter back," Mr J. Clark, secretary of the Plumbers’ Union, undertook to endeavour to secure the right type of employer for the apprentice. “He wants a big man,” warned his Honor: “Tt is rather a pity one of the foremen under whom he has served did not give him the father of a jolly good hiding.”
