A GIRL SHOT

AUCKLAND, April 29
. Florence Horne, aged 19, was admitted to Auckland Hospital this morning with a bullet wound under the heart in the left breast. At 10.30 on Sunday night she fell against the door of the residence of Edward I'alley, a Bombay farmer, semiconscious, clothed in a light if rock. Sergeant Cowan, of Pukekohe, and Doctor McWiiirter attended to the girl and a search resulted in the discovery of a rifle standing up against a drain near the house. The police have traced the ownership of the weapon. Miss Horne had been living with her sister at Oneliunga till a few weeks ago when she went to stay with Iriends at Ararimu. She was to have lelt them ifor a situation last Friday and the last they saw of her was when she left on Saturday night to attend a dance at Poketo.
Chief Detective Hammond, Detectives Sullivan mul Nalder left for Bombay early this morning to make inquiries. Inspector Hollis says so fm the police inquiries indicate no reason to suspect foul play. The girl, in a statement at the hospital said the shooting was accidental. An operation was performed, and her condition is serious.
CHEESE FACTORY
DESTROYED IN WAIKATO
HAMILTON, April 29
A loss of about 95009 was suffered by a fire which'destroyed the Horsham Downs cheese factory, between Hamilton and Ngaruawaliia. this afternoon. The .fire .originated in the boiler room while, the staff were engaged in cheesemaking. A small hose and bucket brigade failed to check the flames. The Hamilton fire engine arrived hut it could only save the outbuildings. The insurances on the building plant and stock by the Commercial Union Office totalled £4BOO. The loss is estimated to he greater than tins. The factory was the only one owned by the Horsham Downs Co-operative Dairy Company.
MAORI GIRL HONORED
GISBORNE, April 30
A ten-year old Maori girl, Lily Otene, of Pkha was yesterday presented by Mayor Coleman with the Royal Humane Society’s certificate for bravery. In December last the girl displayed great presence of. mind in endeavouring to save the life of a young brother, whose clothing caught alight, extinguishing the -.flames ’by wrapping a rug around him. She then returned to the house which was also afire and extinguished the flames, probably saving the life of her sister.
SUICIDE ABOARD SHIP
M AUCKLAND, April 30
B Adler, 25,'a third-class passenger, hooked to Napier, committed suicide by hanging himself in the ship’s hospital on April 18th. when the Tamaroa (From London) .was a week out from Panama. Adler coulcl not speak English.

A verdict that the .Master, Captain T. Henderson, was not to blame, was returned at the nautical inquiry into the s'"-rnl'i'g of the auxiliary ketch Am pa at Waitara on March 30th, whi'h was opemd yesterday by Mi H. A'. Young, S.M. The Court decided on the'evidence ihat Captain Henderson had wi.-e'y used discretion in deciding to enter -he. port. He had negotiated the bar safely and that was the only point on which he had inlormation. It was true that the. harbourmaster had told the master of the Aratapu that the spit had shifted,, hut he had not suggested that the change would effect the water inside the bar. The harbourmaster, knowing the conditions, should have taken soundings inside the bar. The master expected the harbourmaster to take soundings and tell him il there was any material change.
