HEAVY RAIN
FLOODS IN NELSON

NELSON, April 30,
Four point twenty-six inches ol rain were recorded in Nelson district in the last twenty-four hours. The downpour caused the heaviest flood experienced for manv years.
Serious damage was done on the hanks of Brook St. stream, Miss Turton, officer in charge ol the Tourist Department, being tlie greatest sufferer, having her garden washed away and her house dangerously undermined. Low-lying areas in town were flooded. 9
Train services were interrupted this morning by wash-outs at Spr in grove. Motor connections were made and it is anticipated a normal service will he resumed this afternoon.
Hon Atniore and party, proceeding to the West Coast yesterday, were blocked on Spooner’s Range, and on returning to Nelson had a narrow.escape passing through a flooded creek. The driver missed the submerged side of the splash bridge, the wheels on one side of the car only taking it, with the result that the ear leaned dangerously over and filled with water, the occupants escaping out on the upper side. Everything in the car was soaked with water.
Throughout the country districts many smaller bridges and culverts were washed away.
