FIRE IN PRINTING WORKS

DUNEDIN, April 30.

A lire occurred last evening in the printing works at the rear portion of \\ hitcombe and Tombs’ building. Princess Street. The Brigade effected a good save, but the machinery and paper in the printing works and warehouse between were damaged by water. The total insurance on the building, plant and stock is £83,000.

't is understood that the migration returns for the last financial year which will he submitted to Parliament next session, reveal a reduction approximately of 7o per cent, on the number of new settlers assisted to the Dominion in the corresponding period of 1927. The whole portion is being reviewed by the Ward Cabinet before the en<ll of June next.

STEAMER DISABLED. AUCKLAND, April 30

News has been received by radio from Norfolk Island that the Melanesian mission steamer Southern Cross is disabled there with a broken rudder trunk. All passengers except the Misliop of Molyneux landed. A tug is leaving Auckland to tow the vessel back here.
