A body has been formed to he known as the Upper Clntlia 'Progress League with its principal objects and aims to sub-divide the many large holdings and foster closer settlement; to encourage tourist traffic; irrigation; mining and anything connected with the advancement of the district. Mr Bodkin M.P. was elected first President. The sudden death of Mr W. Cotter is reported from Hawea Flat. .Mr Cotter was an active advocate for closer settlement and was peparing to offer himself as an Independent candidate at the last election, hut drew out on account of indifferent health. He carried on the business of store-keeping and was press correspondent to at least two Otago papers. Deceased was unmarried. Messrs Wanaka Motors, the enterprising pioneers of the motor transport of Wanaka and Central Otago have commenced still another new service, from Timaru direct to Wanaka. Passengers leaving Christchurch at 4.30 p.m. may reach 'Pembroke the following evening. Besides a big saving in lares there is also a saving in time, and will undoubtedly become a very popular route. The last deer stalking party have left which concludes the record season.

Mustering on the high country is in full swing. Then' are to bo several local competitors at the Pembroke dog trials.
