GISBORNE, April 20.
Forty-two charges were preferred against two European and eight Maoris at the Port Awanui Police Court on Wednseday, arising 'out of a riot at Teararoa on Saturday night, when Constable Thorn was assaulted and the mob had to be quelled by local residents armed with pick handles. Accused were dealt with as follows — William Brosnahan, nine months hard labour.
Tamati Taiapa, six months hard. Tu Huihui. seven months hard. Graham Edmonds, eight months hard.
Malta Ihaka, six .months hard. Komene Polite, three months hard. Alfred .Moran, six months hard. Watene Poutu, three months hard. Thirau Karaka was ' fined £5 and costs £4.
Poki Paringatai was lined £2 and ■osts £5 10s.
The majority of the accused were 'barged with assaulting the police and ■existing the police, common assault .uid inciting to resist the police.
Fight prisoners will bo brought to tbe Gisborne gaol, when the flooded rivers on the coast subside.
