IN OLD WORLD
I My Telegraph—l 'or Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, April 20
Tim Minister of Agriculture*, a few days ago, received a cablegram from the High Commissioner i that the “ London Times ” had puhlished a series of remarkahle articles liy Sir William Haldane, regarding a serious shortage in heel' production. In a leading article, the “ Times ” strongly supported Sir William Haldane’s views and suggested that an opportunity for Dominion exports would he greatly increased. The High Commissioner further stated that the article in question points out firmly that a shrinkage of exports from Argentine is continuous, figures for 1928 showing a reduction of 24 per cent over those for 1927. Secondly, that owing to the shortage in the number of cattle and the growth of population of the United States, a consider- 1 able amount of beef is being imported into that country from Canada and even New Zealand, despite the taritf barrier, and the opinion is expressed that the United States will he compelled to widen the field from which imports are taken. This being so. it is considered that there should be a big opportunity to other beef producing countries to increase their production for export to Great Britain, which imports 58 per cent of its supplies. i
