AVEULINGTON, April 2G. Speaking of the on'fled statement by Mr Lee (Tasmanian Minister of Lands), Sir Joseph AVArd says': “We 1 have been moving for some time to establish a service of two steamers to nfii regularly between ,the South f Island fiand Mel.ouniei We propose to invite tenders, but certain negotiations have been go,ng on. that have not Anally matured, ibe Government is prepared to give a oibsidv. I am of opinion that in due ■ourso we will have a serbiee. Naturally we were‘"anxious to have Hobart included and discussed the question as ■u whether, the Commonwealth authorities would remove the impost, of what i understand to be ten .shillings per •lassenger between Hobart and Mel-
ourne.
The Government is in earnest, in its los ire to have a service of a permannt nature established. Some forty real's ago we maintained a regular weekly service of several 'steamers, and in the southern portion of New Zealand there is a fixed determination on the part of the people to have a suitaide service inaugurated. The Government will do its part in tile matter of subsidy.
