In passing sentence, the Recorder said: “You are an unprincipled, mendacious, unscrupulous adventuress. You have profaned the house of God •md outraged the decencies of nature. The least punishment you have earned is nine months.”

To prevent the introduction ol the plague and other disease, the Government has banned imports of fruit and vegetables from Japan, United'States. Canada, New Zealand, and cargoes cn route will be subjected to scientific examination, and if suspected they will be destroyed or returned.

The Duke of Sutherland has sold to a New York art dealer, for approximately c£7O.(XH) 'sterling, the famous Romney portrait, of the Duchess of Sutherland, which has hung in the Surrey Mansion for years. This is an interesting sequel to the recent dispute in which the Duke sent a lettei to the same New York dealer, who had been exhibiting a Romney picture of the Duchess, stating it was not the original. but a copy.
