COAL OUTPUT

A RECORD

WELLINGTON, April 23. The Minister of Minos, Mr Veitch, has announced that the output of coal in the Doiiriiiion during the past year, according to the returns just completed, constitutes a record. The total output was 2,-130,637 tons, as compared with the record put up in the previous year of 2,3GG,7-10 tons.

The Minister remarked with satisfaction on the result of the year’s working in the mines. The total number of persons employed in the mining industry, during the year was 5,380, an increase of 22. The imports of coal for the past 12 months amounted to 2-18,052 tons, which is 1150,038 tons less than was imported during 1927-28. The quantity of coal exported was 125,093 tons, or 18,347 tons less than in the previous year.
