To-day at the unemployed meeting, their representatives at the deputation told the meeting something of what Sir Joseph Ward had promised. it was stated that Sir Joseph Ward told the deputation that he hoped to provide worx for about AIM) men before the construction w.rk bn the South Island Main Trunk Railway is started, and that these railway wonts would give employment to from fiOOo to 5000 men. It was also stated that Sir Joseph Ward told the deputation to keep oil hammering at the local bodies until .nay Ist.

Hon J. 15. Donald, P. stmastor-Gen-erai, has a leiegram from the Prime Minister, recalling an earlier intimation that a Government subsidy of £25.000 is available under certain conditions (at £ for £ up to a maximum of £25,000, if found by the city) for the Auckland unemployed. Sir Joseph Ward stated: There has been no application made l>v the Auckland Municipality for any subsidy from the Government. 1 made a statement in Cabinet. and also in the press, that it would lie treated the same as Wellington. Before any undertaking was given to Wellington regarding a subsidy, it had to r n plv and undertake to spend at least £25.000 on works approved by the Public Works Engineer, Wellington. and to find all tools and materials. The Mayor of Auckland said the Council had no advice that £25,000 was available. He said the Council could not have provided £25.000 from city funds towards the end of last finan. cial year.
