HOKITIKA GOLF CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual general meeting was hold in the County Chambers oil Friday last at 8 p.m., Air J. C. AlacfarJune presiding over an attendance of forty members.

The minutes of the previous annual general meeting wore read and confirmed.

CHAIRAI AN’S R EPORT

Ladies and Gentlemen: —I have the honour to report on the operations of vour Club for the past year as Billows :

Alatches :—Club Championship, Air J. A. Cliesney (holder). Ladies championship, Afiss Al. E. Aloorc (holder); Opening Alixed Foursome, Aliss Irwin and Steel; Final Alixed Foursome, Airs Alorris and Cagnev; Alixed Foursome Handicap (Air Irwin's trophy), Airs Caliari and Adamson; Alon’s Four hall Bogey Handicap

(Air Cliesney f s trophy), Alessrs Houston and Caliari: Captain versus Secretary Teams’ A! a tell, Captain’s team: Medal Aggregate (Cranston Vase), Ah G. Adamson; Bogey Aggregate (Captain’s trophy). Air G. Adamson:

Hole-in-One Club, Mr J. A. Cliesney. The usual monthly medal and hogev matches were also played. Scddon Challenge Cup.—The usual inter-club .match in this connection with Greymouth was played on the Hokitika Links on June 3rd (King’s Birthday) and resulted in a win for Grevmoutli after a close contest. The

Cup was not competed for again during the season which is to he regretted in view of the importance of these matches in developing the social.and educational aspects of the game. A second team from Hokitika held conclusions with a Greymouth team on the Ornoto Links also on June 3rd and suffered defeat. It is hoped that every effort will he made during this season to further foster these populai

inter-club matches. West Coast Championship Aleeting— This meeting was held at Greymouth towards the latter end of the season, n number of players from this Clul competing. It is regretted that All cliesney, holder of the Championship, was, at the last moment through illness, prevented from attending to defend his title, which was won by Air Sims, of Westport. f l lie meeting will be held this year at Westport, am! it is hoped that as many players aposihle will endeavour to compete. Standardisation ol Course—As tli< result of a decision reached by the New Zealand Association in this con no.tion. -with a view to bringing al' Clubs in the Dominion into line a regards handicap values, tiie pur o your Links was assessed by the Assoon it ion at 74 strokes, being 4 strokes less than the local par adopted foi some years past. , The new figures will now he adopted, and result in al local handicaps being automatically increased hv 4 strokes, the limit handicap of 30 will however still be ad hered to. Tiie effect of this adjustment will be the automatic allotmen to players of their National handicaps.

Professional Coach.—Air Lambic professional coach, under engagemen to the New Zealand Association visit ed Hokitika towards the close of tli season and was kept fully engaged It is hoped to again have the benefi of Air Lambic’s coaching this season and players desiring coaching should make early notification to the Secretary in order that the period fo which the coach may be engaged may be regulated accordingly. He wil probably be in Hokitika early )

July. Rules of Etiquette.—l would agai. request tin? hearty co-operation of al players both old and new. in seeing that the rules under this heading art

strictly observed, particularly in regard to replacing the turf and allow ing players in following matches t< go through, when otherwise undue delay would he caused by unwarranted holding up. New players are particularly requested to make themselver conversant with the rules of golf generally. copies of which may he oh taint'd from the Secretary.

Membership.—The membership of the Club shows a steady increase ant at the end of the season stood at tin •satisfactory figure of 118, exclusive of country and intermittent members A few resignations have since beer received, but it is anticipated tlml these will be idled at an early date. Finance.—lt is satisfactory to record that the large amount of arrears. or outstanding subscriptions disclosed in' last year's balance slice' lias been substantially reduced. Tin arrears however on this season’s operations again calls, for some comment the amount outstanding exceeding even that of last year’s. ’I he balance sheet on the whole, however, disclosed a satisfactory position. No doubt the position regarding arrears will he discussed at this meeting. The thanks of the Club are due to those who donated trophies and to the Ladies Committee for a substantial donation from their funds also to the press for its unfailing courtesy in publishing drawings and results of matches.

The outgoing Committee recommends that the season he opened on Saturday the 27th instant with a Fixed Foursome Handicap.

The Balance Sheet will now be read, but before having this done I would like to place on record the valuable service rendered to the Club for many years past by Mr .Morris, the Hon. Treasurer, whose resignation as a member of the Club has been received. It will be your duty to appoint a new treasurer at- this meeting. Received und adopted.

Trophies won during the year were then presented.

ELECTION OF OFF IGF ICS

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted:— Captain: Mr J. C. Mnefarlane. Hon. Secretary: Mr 1. Cagney.

lion. Treasurer: Mr J. A. Chesney

Committee: Alesdamcs Staveley and .Moore. Messrs Cooke, Spencer, .“Wilson Neville and Adamson. Mr Cooke was appointed lion. Auditor.

The Secretary advised receipt of eight silver tankards from .Mr Cranston to be kept in the pavilion for the use of members.—Unsolved that the Secretary write to Mr Cranston thanking him for his generous .donation and conveying the meeting’s resolution to that effect.

Various matters of Club interest were discussed alter which it was decided to open tiie season on Saturday, the 27th hist, with a Mixed Foursome Handicap Match over 13 holes. A vote of thanks to the County Council for the use ot the rooms and to the Chairman e' licluded the meeting.

HOKITIKA LADIES’ GOLF CLUB.

The annual meeting of the Ladies’ Club was held in the Count'- Chambers at 7 p.m. on Friday. Ifiih inst., Mrs Staveley (Captain) in the > hair, and 27 memlxus being present. ' ’’c annual report and balance sheet werread and adopted, and various matters in connection with the coming season discussed. Mrs “Wilson moved a vote, of thanks and appreciation to Mrs Buchanan for her work as Secretary during the past season, expressing regret at her departure and wishing her every success in the future. Tiie motion was seconded hy Mrs Staveley and carried hy acclamation. The election of officers ior the ensuing year then took place and resulted as follows: —

Captain: Airs Staveley (after ballot Mrs Butler also being nominated.)

Secretary: Miss Aloore. L.G.U. Handicap Manager: Afiss Lewis ( re-elected).

Junior Handicap Manager: Airs Irwin (re-elected). This concluded the business and a vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting. ANNUAL REVOLT.

Ladies.—Your Committee begs to submit the following report for the season of 11)28.

'flie season was not an entirely suc'•essful one. owing to the unusual amount of wet weather, which made it difficult to get the matches off up -<) time. The thanks of the Committee are rendered to donors of trophies. viz : Alesdamcs Wilson. Staveley. Died rich, Baird. Buchanan and Aliss Lewis. Our balance sheet shows a credit of £0 2s 3d which, considering the many wet Saturdays is satisfactory. Wo wish to thank all the lady members of the Club, who, hv providing the Saturday afternoon teas, contributed so substantially to this balance. AVord lias been received from the General Secretary L.G.U. that the par of the Links lias been reduced to 77. As our Club is in the Metropolitan district of the Christchurch L.G.U.. the General Secretary has instructed two players from the Christ•hurcli Club to play over our Lillies. The scratch score will be open to alteration by them. Up to the piesent Liu' general condition of the Links has boon too unsatisfactory for the phtyrs to test it. Our thanks are due o Mr Cagney for his assistance in supplying ms with a surveyed map of die Links which we were asked by the L.G.U. to submit.

AYe also wish to thank the “Press” for their unfailing courtesy in publishing our reports and matches. In severing my connection with the Club, f wish to thank all those members who were so helpful to me during my term of office and to wish the Club all success and prosperity in the future, L. A.
