BRITISH ATTITUDE
TO SOVIET STATEMENT.
(Britisli Official Wireless.)
(Received this day at. noon.) RUGBY. April 22
Sir Austen Chamberlain (Foreign Secretary) replying to a question in the House of Commons, made a state-, meat regarding the declaration of Piatakov (President of the Soviet State Bank) that if a satisfactory financial programme could he reached, orders amounting to 0150,000,000 could easily he placed in Britain. Sir A. Chamberlain said: ‘‘B,v satisfactory financial programme, Pintnkov appears to have explained that ho meant, an agreement fora guarantee on lines of the dealt treaty of 1021, properly extended and supplemented. From this it will he seen that tin 1 placing r-if orders in this country is made to depend, not only upon the resumption of diplomatic relations between His Majesty’s Government and the Soviet Government hut also apparently upon the granting of extensive credits to that government. Thus no satisfaction is offered for abuses ol which the British Government complained, whilst the demand is made foi a revival of the financial provision ol 1924 draft treaty which the Britisli Government declared to he unacceptable.”
