CHRISTCHURCH, April 19

Dr W. Atkin, Medical Officer in charge of the military sanatorium at Caslmiere, has handed in his resignation which will he considered by the North Canterbury Hospital Board at its next meeting.

WELLINGTON, April 18.

During A lurch the total live births registered for urban areas amounted to 1002 as against 961 in February, si.li increase of thirty-eight. Deaths in March wore 449, an increase of 43 as compared with tTio previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 227 and females 222. Forty-seven of the deaths were of children under live years of age. being 10.47 per cent of the whole number. Thirty-three of these were under one year of age.

FIRE AT KAIAPOf

CHRISTCHURCH, April 19

The Kaiapoi “Record” newspaper and printing office, situated in Raven Street. Kaiapoi, was destroyed by fire at 3 o’clock yesterday morning.

The building, which was of wood, was built in 1860, and was used as a. library and Mechanics’ Institute until 1909, when it was acquired by the late Mr H. A. Cooper for a printing office. The present owner. Mr R. J. Logan; took over the business from Mr Cooper in 1921.

When discovered, the fire had such a firm hold that the brigade had ;o confine its efforts to saving the adjacent property. The insurances on stock and plant total £B6O in the Royal office.

A youth aged sixteen years, who is employed by the Post Office at lailiape confessed to-day to having appropriated many money letters in the outward correspondence since February. Complaints led to action bv dee police. Accused will appear in ’.ho Juvenile Court on Friday week.

BREACH OF APIARIES ACT

WELLINGTON, April 18

Breaches of the Apiaries Act wore admitted by Thomas Burrell, a laiui agent, of Upper Hutt, at the Magistrate’s Court. He was charged with allowing access by bees to combs taken from infected hives before they had been thoroughly sterilised to remove infection. He was also enlarged with keeping hoes in an unregistered apiary.

The Magistrate said that the offence on the first charge was looked upon seriously by the Legislature, and fined Burrell £O. 011 the second charge Burrell was convicted and ordered to pay costs.

SERIOUS ASSAULT ALLEGED.

AUCKLAND, April 18

To-day a charge was heard against Bertram James O’Connor, of assaulting a young woman at Afount Albert, on the n'ight of March 28. '1 bis was the case in which a woman was hit on the head with an iron bar and severely injured. O’Connor was also charged with indecent assault, and exposure and obscene language, allegedly happening in the same vicinity on different dates.

Accused pleaded not guilty to all four charges and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was refused.

The Presbyterian Manse at Bhiif. occupied by Rev. Air AA’addell. was completely destroyed by fire this afternoon. Afr AA’addell an family were present at the time. Practically in - tiling was saved from the building, and Air AA'addell and family have sustained a serious loss.

AYAIPUKURAIJ, April 19,

Farmer Donald McLeod owning 1901 acres at Porangahu, was charged before the Alagistrate, Air Mowlem.

to-day. on its information of the Hawke’s Bay Rabbit Board, with failing to take adequate steps to cope with the destruction of rabbits. The defence was that the rabbits came from surrounding properties. The Magistrate said that it did not matter whence (lie rabbits came, the onus was oil the defendant, to take measures to prevent their increase. The law governing the matter could not be flouted. Any breaches must be treated seriously in view of the depredations and heavy losses caused by rabbits in other parts of the Dominion. Ale Lend was convicted and lined LlO.
