FOOTBALL.

OPENING OF THE SEASON

The Westland Sub-Union opens the season’s competitions to-morrow afternoon when' senior, junior and thirdgade games arc set down at the several centres.

In the senior competition there are two Clubs from the Westland SubUnion taking part with five other Clubs from the north under the banner of the West Coast Rugby Union. The Excelsior Club is reported to he in a strong position, with a good leaven of last, year’s champions again donning the jersey and a number o‘F new players of promise, so that they , should be able to uphold club honours. The Kiwi Club has had additions to its ranks from the country players, and should he able to present a fairly strong fifteen, if they arc able to combine sufficiently. Some of the Clubs had a run round a week ago, but until the colours are up it will not be easy to guage the strength of the several teams, especially those in the north, which were somewhat weak at the end of last season.

The junior competitions should serve to bring out some of the younger players who last season gave everv promise of great improvement, some of tin junior teams last year giving ex"Hent showings in the various competitions. The junior and third grade competitions are confined to players under tinjurisdiction of the Westland Sub-Union but there is every prospect of a useful season resulting.

With the opening of the season it is hoped that play will commence promptly at the appointed hour and that the players will appear in their Club colours, not as in previous years in any available jersey of any colour. Referees have quite sufficient to do to watch the game, without having specially to watch different jerseys as well.
